Tunstall's first appearance of note was a solo performance of "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" on Later with Jools Holland.
The performance was notable as she had only 24 hours to prepare, after scheduled performer Nas cancelled due to his father's ill health.
Her performance caught the eye of many viewers, upstaging more established acts such as The Cure, Embrace, and The Futureheads.
She even went on to top the post-show poll on the website for that episode.

Tunstall is known for her live performances, in which she combines virtuoso use of a loop pedal (an AKAI E2 Headrush, which she affectionately calls "Wee Bastard,") with a full four-piece backing band.

Tunstall was born in Edinburgh and was subsequently adopted.

Her adoptive father was a physics lecturer at the University of St Andrews, and her adoptive mother a school teacher.

Tunstall's adoptive family also included an older brother named Joe and a younger brother named Daniel.

In her twenties, Tunstall met her birth mother, who told her that her biological father was a folk musician.

She spent time performing on Church Street in Burlington, Vermont, and at a commune in rural Vermont.

Tunstall has been dating Luke Bullen, the drummer in her band, since 2003, and they now live together in Edinburgh.

Her birth mother is half Chinese and her father, whom she has never met, is Irish.

The video for the song Black Horse and the Cherry Tree ranked #19 on VH1's 40 Greatest Videos of 2006. During the program's airing, Tunstall stated that the day of the video shoot was the only time she had ever worn red lipstick.

As an April Fool's Day joke, KT's manager told her that another artist was about to release a song almost identical to "Other Side of the World", so they would have to shelve Tunstall's release. As she was proud of her song and fell for the prank, Tunstall joked that she would have to do something major to get him back next year.

There are three different music videos for "Suddenly I See"; one for the USA, one animated, and one for the UK. The US Version features Tunstall in different situations involving a circus in Romania. The video was filmed in Bucharest by the local production company, Domino Film - Catalin Neagu, and the casting was done by Standard Casting - Sorin Tarau. This version aired for a short time and the US and has seemingly been replaced in rotations by the animated version. The animated version, directed by Honey, features KT walking around an animated pop-up fantasy world, and engages in activities such as walking up giant guitars, riding miniature trains, and drifting off into space. The UK version is a simple performance video in which KT and her band play across from another set of KT and her band.
